The vision emerged from a clear realization: although the nation invests in poverty reduction, the root driver of hardship in coastal regions—climate change—remains insufficiently addressed. Over the years, repeated climate disasters deeply shaped this understanding. Cyclone Sidr (2007), Cyclone Nargis (2008), Cyclone Aila (2009), Cyclone Bulbul (2019), Cyclone Amphan (2020) and Cyclone Yaas (2021) severely affected coastal settlements, destroying homes, farmlands and fisheries and displacing countless families. These repeated shocks touched the hearts of the founders and highlighted the urgent need for long-term climate-resilient solutions. At the same time, man-made crises—including air pollution, water pollution and ecosystem degradation—continue to accelerate climate vulnerability.
Inspired by these realities, a dedicated group of young changemakers united to amplify the voices of climate-affected communities and strengthen their resilience. They witnessed that coastal residents, despite contributing minimal emissions, bear disproportionate climate burdens, yet continue to demonstrate courage, local adaptation knowledge and strong environmental ethics.
The CliMates emerged not only as an organization but as a collaborative platform committed to climate education, advocacy, grassroots action and community-driven innovation. By empowering vulnerable groups, promoting sustainable practices and advancing climate justice, The CliMates strives to support resilient livelihoods and safeguard ecosystems. Guided by youth leadership and grounded in coastal resilience, it continues its mission to protect people, nature and future generations across Bangladesh.
